General Surgeons
A General Surgeon specializes in the diagnostic, preoperative, operative, and postoperative management of patients in every age group. Most, though not all patients, are referred to the practice by their physicians.

Surgical Associates of Opelousas is committed to providing the highest level of professional services. These high standards of surgical excellence are paired with important human qualities, resulting in a unique level of comfort and confidence between doctor and patient.

A general surgeon is a physician who has been trained to be an expert in a broad variety of surgical treatment, including:

  • Abdominal surgery
  • Breast surgery
  • Endocrine surgery
  • Vein surgery
  • Trauma care
  • Minimally invasive surgery
Board-certified general surgeons receive their certification from the American College of Surgeons. To receive this certification, the surgeon must complete vigorous training, demonstrating a mastery of the specialty. Once certified, the surgeon must continue to train and renew certification.

General surgeons have assumed a pivotal role in the rapid advancements of surgical evaluation and treatment we enjoy today.

An important example is trauma care, essentially defined by a group of general surgeons in the 1960s and 1970s, when there was no such thing as emergency care, trained field and transport personnel, or emergency department triage.

General surgeons also helped to define and shape the field of surgical oncology, cancer surgery. They work closely with oncologists and other sub-specialty practitioners to surgically treat cancer, providing patients with a comprehensive treatment plan for all types of cancer.

Most recently, general surgeons have led the way in developing minimally invasive surgical techniques, including laporscopic surgery, which provide patients with surgical options that offer quicker and less complicated recoveries, as well as less trauma to the body.
